Safety Officer
Job Summary
The Safety Officer plays a vital role in supporting the University of New Orleans’ commitment to a safe and compliant campus environment. This position is responsible for coordinating and implementing campus-wide safety initiatives, ensuring compliance with state and federal safety regulations, and serving as the primary liaison with external safety and emergency preparedness agencies. The Safety Officer will lead inspections, accident investigations, training, and emergency preparedness efforts, helping to promote a culture of safety and risk mitigation throughout the University community.
Position Responsibilities
• Ability to become an Operational Risk Management (ORM) registered Loss Prevention Coordinator by taking required courses – Safety meetings, Incident/accident investigation, Inspections, Supervisors Responsibilities and Job Safety Analysis.
• Responsible for the University complying with and successful completion of audits by the state’s ORM program.
• Oversee fire extinguishers monthly inspections and annual inspections.
• Conduct quarterly building safety inspections.
• Conduct accident investigations as required.
• Conduct quarterly training for accident investigations.
• Ensure electronic quarterly safety meetings are completed.
• Assist in the development of emergency preparedness plans for the University.
• Set up and test Privateer alert system (including siren).
• Liaison with City of New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.
• Accompany Fire Marshall Officer on annual building inspections.
• Set up annual tests of building evacuations (fire drills) in all University buildings, document for Fire Marshal and ORM audit.
• As needed, set up fire watch for UNO buildings whose fire alarms do not work.
• Coordinate quarterly disposal of hazardous waste with external contractor and file Annual Hazardous Waste report to DEQ RCRA.
• Request quotes for repairs/replacement needed to maintain annual certifications for fire alarms, sprinklers, clean agent systems, fire extinguishers, kitchen suppression systems.
• Process invoices for the repairs and inspections (annual and semiannual) for fire alarms, sprinklers, clean agent systems, fire extinguishers, kitchen suppression systems.
• Coordinate with building coordinators the repairs and inspections of the (annual and semiannual) for fire alarms, sprinklers, clean agent systems, fire extinguishers, kitchen suppression systems.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree in Health and Safety, Engineering, or other science related area, or in lieu of a degree, five years experience in safety, risk management, loss prevention, or similar field.
• Five years experience working in a college, university, or similar organization.
Desired Qualifications
• Master's degree in Health and Safety, Engineering, or other science related area.
