Royal Design House is a premier custom gown and costume company based in New Orleans, specializing in creating exquisite designs for the Queens, Kings, and Courts of Carnival. Position Overview:

In this role as a Draper/Dressmaker, you will play a vital role in the seamless execution of our productions and ball seasons. Working closely with the Designer and our skilled team, you will be instrumental in upholding the impeccable standards of craftsmanship that Royal Design House is renowned for.

Contract Duration:

June 16, 2025- February 17, 2025, with flexible start date and possibility for extension.

Compensation:

• $20-$24 per hour, with overtime paid at time and a half

• Standard work hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 am - 6:00 pm

• Summer hours are Monday-Thursday 9:00 am-5:00 pm until August 18, 2025

• Flexibility for weekend and evening work closer to Mardi Gras, based on schedule

• Occasional evening assistance at events during the Carnival season may be required

Responsibilities:

• Draft and modify patterns, advise on construction techniques, and oversee the creation of custom costumes and gowns

• Collaborate with the Designer and Shop Supervisor on fittings, alterations, and project management

• Liaise with team members to ensure optimal construction processes and fitting execution

• Assist with metalwork, sourcing fabric and notions, and communicating construction methods within the team

• Support in fitting room organization, clean-up, and inventory management

• Provide assistance at Carnival season balls, offering customer service and dressing support

• Facilitate effective communication between the Designer and clients, and uphold artistic design integrity

• Attend production meetings to provide updates on project progress and collaborate on labor estimates and calendar management

• Maintain meticulous filing systems for patterns, measurements, sourcing lists, and production documentation

Skills/Qualifications: Draping and Construction

• Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Costume, Fashion Technology, or related field; Master’s Degree advantageous

• 3-5 years of draping experience, with a preference for 5+ years of professional experience

• Proficient in high-level draping, pattern drafting, and garment construction for men’s and women’s apparel

• Extensive knowledge of couture-level stitching, tailoring, millinery, and craftsmanship

• General understanding of design elements, fashion trends, and costume history

Management Skills:

• Project management expertise is beneficial

• Strong multitasking abilities, effective communication, and accurate estimation of labor and material costs

• Organized, detail-oriented, and efficient in space and time management

• Professional and friendly interpersonal skills with colleagues and clients

• Adherence to a high level of professionalism in all interactions

• Willingness to learn
