Finance and Development Director
Overview:
The Finance and Development Director is a key leadership role at Step Up Louisiana, responsible for overseeing the financial and fundraising operations of the organization. This position combines strategic financial management with innovative development initiatives to ensure financial health and sustainability. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in financial management and nonprofit fundraising, demonstrating expertise in compliance, budget analysis, and grant management. This position is part of our Senior Leadership Team.Responsibilities: Finance 80% of the position:
- Oversee and manage the organization’s annual audit process, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Conduct regular comparisons of budgeted to actual financial performance, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions quarterly.
- Supervise and mentor the accountant, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting and effective performance including the monthly close of the books.
- Monitor coding for staff time and expenses to maintain budget integrity and maximize financial efficiency.
- Develop financial strategies and forecasts in collaboration with the senior leadership team.
- Support the annual budget process through collaborating with the co-directors, the development coordinator, and the accountant to prepare the budget for board approval.
- Report as requested to the board of directors.
- Coordinate with the Co-Directors and Board Treasurers to develop a finance committee and meeting schedule
- Support regular financial policy updates as needed.
- Drive special projects in finance including maximizing savings accounts and emerging financial matters.
- Submit timely campaign finance reports
Development 20% of the position:
- Supervise the Development Coordinator and contract grant writer ensuring effective execution of development plans and achievement of fundraising goals.
- Manage our portfolio of grant writing and reporting, maintaining strong relationships with funders and ensuring compliance with grant requirements.
- Pursue emergeing sources of income for the organization, including initiatives related to investment accounts and university partnerships.
- Lead the planning and execution of special fundraising events and campaigns including the gala, capital campaigns, and individual donor database management.
- Collaborate with the communications team to enhance donor engagement and public visibility of fundraising efforts.
- Handle projecting revenue, development goals to actuals, and other fundraising projection monitoring, reporting, and analysis.
- Pull financial reports as needed for Development.
Qualifications and Desired Skill Set:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, nonprofit administration, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Knowledge of nonprofit accounting and finance compliance, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles(GAAP) and legislative audit reporting requirements
- Minimum of 5 years experience in financial management and fundraising in a nonprofit environment.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proficient in Quickbooks and Excel
- Demonstrated success in grant writing, donor prospecting and fundraising in a nonprofit .
- Strong supervising skills previous experience supervising finance and development staff in a nonprofit organization
- A commitment to the mission of Step Up Louisiana
- Experience working with a Co-Director leadership model, a plus
- Experience with mutli-entity projects preferred, Step Up Louisiana has a sister organization Step Up for Action and the finance and development director will be responsible for working on both organizations’ financials
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including board members, staff, members, and donors.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
The position is based in New Orleans and the expectation is that the Finance and Development Director will work out of the New Orleans office in-person at minimum 3 days per week during the work week unless working with another chapter in-person. There are regular work-hours for travel to the other Step Up Louisiana offices for meetings, organizing, and events. Work is generally performed from the office setting or other location to complete the required assignments of the position. Long and extended hours and a minimal amount of overnight travel including to Baton Rouge and other locations may be required approximately 6 times a year.
Compensation & Benefits:
The annual gross salary for this position is $65,000. Benefits include, a car stipend, phone reimbursement, employer paid medical, dental, and vision with an employer contribution to dependent coverage, paid holidays, vacation and sick time.
